Tackle Football Is a Girl's Game, Too

These champs prove tackle football is a girl’s game, too and are breaking gender stereotypes in sports. The ladies of the Colorado freeze in Denver were the 2017 Founders Bowl champs of the Independent Women’s Football League.

“It wasn’t something that was ever even heard of, so I didn’t know it was a dream of mine until I came upon this team.” Nicole “Tonka” Torres stated.

Women’s leagues have been around for 40 years, but girls had no way of learning the sport because many school didn’t allow girl to join the team. Fortunately, that’s changed a lot in recent years, and more girls are now taking the field.

But despite this, women still struggle to get in the game — it costs the Colorado Freeze $50,000 in expenses to practice, travel and play each year, while many women balance full-time jobs and families. The Freeze started a GoFundMe to help raise money, since it’s difficult to get sponsorship.

The team also wants more little girl learning the sport and, eventually, in the big leagues, so women’s football gets the recognition it deserves. Thanks to teams like The Freeze, women are being represented in sports that previously excluded or obscured them.
